COMm LAB: Video + Sound (week1)

1. Overview of Course

2. Sound art

3. Adobe Audition

Chimamanda’s speech strike a chord in my hearts from the beginning, because I had a similar experience. I used to take the plots that I captured in foreign books and movies as the imagination of my future life. However, these books and movies are based on similar cultural backgrounds that are far from my own. Leading me to take a one-sided and shallow view of myself and the world for a long time.

This speech also reminds me of another wonderful TED lecture brought by Ann Morgan --“My year reading a book from every country in the world”.In the lecture, Ann introduced her own experience. Before 2012, most of the books she read are written by English and American author. Thus, there were very few books from beyond the English-speaking world. She set a challenge to herself: to read one book from every country in the world over the course of a year. What she gained from this experience is ——Books have the extraordinary power to take one out of itself and into someone else’s mindset and look at the world through different eyes, which can be really enlightening. Wrestling with different ideas can help clarify one’s own thinking. And it can also show up blind spots in the way one might have been looking at the world. To me, Chimamanda points out the danger of a single story, and Ann explained the benefits of reading different stories.

In my opinion, the greatest danger of a single story is to judge anything based on bias and prejudice. Because it will encourage the laziness, narrow the vision and prevent people from understanding this world objectively. Comprehensive observations and researches must be taken before we try to give labels to certain cultures or groups, only in this way can we understanding the diversification and appreciating the beauty of our world.

2.Short sound

My short sound is inspired by an artwork called “behind the leather”. It’s a visual art work, which shows the cruelty of fur products, and I want to use the sound to describe the scene that shows in this artwork.
